Chinese Coins

Why was a small, round piece of fine metal—a coin—revered by ancient Chinese Emperors? What primordial discipline (in which these coins played an integral part) held such sway that those Emperors and their courtiers guarded it closely, passing its secrets down by word of mouth only, with death the punishment to any non-royal who dared to learn the mystery?

To answer these questions and more, Energy Muse is honored to reveal "The Secret of the Chinese Coin" to you!

The Chinese Coins used in the practice of Feng Shui (pronounced "fung shway") are considered to be the most powerful manifesting tools for attracting wealth, prosperity, and endless fortune, especially those from the extremely auspicious Qing (pronunciation similar to the English word "chin") or Ch'ing Dynasty.

Round in external shape, the coins have a square hole in the center. The round shape symbolizes heaven, and the internal square represents earth. When used by humans, the coins represent the engagement luck of “Heaven-Earth-Mankind.”

Feng Shui tenets call for the coins to be made of fine metal, such as brass or bronze (like the coins used in all Energy Muse coin pieces) rather than resin, which is brittle in nature and lacks the proper “metal energy.” These fine metals, with their strength and elegance, have the powerful metal energy needed to even further activate the luck and wealth "chi" (energy flow; defined literally as “air” or “breath”).

To activate the energy of the coins even more, they are tied together in groups of three with red thread. Both the use of red thread and the grouping of three coins, which represents the trinity of heaven, earth and mankind luck, add tremendously to the potency of the wealth and prosperity energy.

As a Feng Shui expert, Heather Askinosie, Energy Muse's co-founder and jewelry designer, knew the incredible power of this energy. She designed and created the first Energy Muse Coin piece: the Prosperity necklace (and subsequent Wealth and all other Coin jewelry) around these core Feng Shui concepts.

The fine metal Chinese coins used in each Energy Muse necklace and bracelet are genuine Qing Dynasty pieces. The Qing Dynasty was the final Chinese Dynasty, lasting from 1644 to 1911. It was not until the Qing Dynasty that China enjoyed what are known as the “Five Auspicious Dynasties” or first five reigns of the Qing Dynasty: Shun-Chi (1644-1661), Kang-Hsi (1661-1722), Yung-Cheng (1723-1735), Chien-Lung (1736-1796), and Chia-Ching (1796-1820).

Chinese Coins are essential ingredients in the practice of Feng Shui. Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony with the environment. The literal translation is "wind and water".

Feng Shui is not, as some mistakenly believe, a decorating style. Rather, it involves the use of geographical, psychological, philosophical, mathematical, aesthetic, and astrological concepts in relation to space and energy flow. Feng shui is a discipline with guidelines similar to many techniques of architectural planning.

In ancient China, Feng Shui was a tradition handed down orally through emperors and their courts. Non-royalty were not allowed to know the secrets of Feng Shui, and trying to obtain this knowledge was an offense punishable by death.

It was the norm of each emperor to mark coins made during his reign. Close inspection of Chinese coins minted during the Qing Dynasty show the front of each coin to have four Chinese characters, one on each side of the internal square hole. The top and bottom character on each coin reveals the Dynasty in which the coin was minted.

The Yang side of the coin (the side which has four Chinese characters inscribed on it) should always be facing outward, with the opposite side (which has two characters pictured) facing inward. In addition, the two characters that denote the dynasty in which the coin was created should be at the top and bottom of the coin. You will notice that all Energy Muse coin pieces have the Yang side of the coin facing outward on both the front and back of any three-coin grouping, and the dynasty markings are always on the top and bottom.
