Sage is a plant whose scent is revered for its ability to purify, protect and elevate space. Not exclusive to space, a sage smudge stick is also a power ally for easing emotional flurries, and freeing the spirit up to accept the light of positivity. The influence that burning sage can have on one’s spirit and space lies within their intention. For sage cleansing to work, you must focus your energy on a clear intention before burning it. This is why a sage smudge stick is used before rituals and ceremonies in Native American cultures. White sage is one of many plants that are sacred to Native Americans. Revered for its medicinal properties, Native Americans believe that the healing plant can provide a bridge to the spiritual realm through which the smoke will carry their prayers. We can use sage in same way, by employing its power to both eliminate negativity and open our mind to a higher spirituality. With a raised awareness, we ascend beyond the energy clogs that blocked our intentions from maturing into reality. We are able to see situations more clearly, and our mind becomes open to forgiveness, compromise and other forms of emotional progress. Burning sage can have a significant impact when used after an argument, after an illness, before and after parties, after an intense workout, prior to meditation, when moving into a new space and during periods of grieving. Proper use of a sage smudge stick doesn’t have to include a complex ritual, but even a simple smudging can be enhanced by implementing certain tips. When wafting the sage around your space, be certain pay extra attention to gateway areas like windows, doorways, hallways and closets. Make sure windows are open to allow ventilation so that the smoke does not become overwhelming. To direct the smoke, you can one hand to hold the burning sage within an abalone shell or similar non-flammable bowl, and use your other hand or a feather to send the smoke where you’d like it to go. Along with its healing properties for the spirit, the smoke of white sage can instantly neutralize any odors in your home, which makes it a safe and natural alternative to other room sprays or air fresheners. If you feel a sense of heaviness in your home, it would also be a good time to give each room a sage burning session, which will clear and purify the air. We also recommend burning sage before any type of therapeutic session, whether it’s meditation, yoga, or another type of self-care. According to ancient folklore, Native Americans believed that using the abalone shell as a white sage smudge bowl helped to carry their messages up to heaven. They also believed that a water vessel should not come into contact with fire, which is why we recommend placing a thin layer of white sand at the bottom of your abalone shell; it will protect its iridescent Mother of Pearl sheen from burn marks. The sand also catches the ashes of burning sage while quickly stopping the smoke when you’re finished with your sage burning session. The Native Americans also believed that the Mother of Pearl on the inside of the Abalone Shell helped to enhance intuition and wisdom. It also contains healing properties that are known to boost feelings of compassion and creativity. When you perform a cleansing ritual with an Abalone Shell and white sage smoke, it helps create a sense of purity and purpose. In combination with white sage, its energy is believed to connect your spirit to the divine realm using your highest chakras as a conduit. On a practical level, the Abalone shell also has a row of holes that can be used to place your smoke wafting feather or incense sticks. The ears of the sea, an Abalone shell is perfectly shaped for holding all your natural cleansing tools. It also looks naturally beautiful on a coffee table, nightstand, or another spot where you’ll have quick and easy access to it. Abalone shell can also serve as a base for burning incense cones like frankincense or Palo Santo. When you combine the synergistic cleansing properties of other healing tools with white sage, it becomes strong enough to neutralize negative or low vibrational energy that can creep in from the outside. Every time you use your abalone shell and white sage for a cleansing practice, it connects you to mother nature and the highest vibrations of the planet. Unlike artificial cleaners and fragrances, white sage brings us back to nature and its incredible ability to heal and renew. TO SAGE YOUR HOME: Your home should be a place where you can relax and rejuvenate for the day ahead. To keep your home vibing with positive energy, it’s important to cleanse the space. In fact, we recommend doubling down on your energy cleansing by also burning Palo Santo, a sweet smelling wood that helps balance the earthy smell of white sage. When you burn both of these cleansing tools, first the cleansing sage and then the uplifting palo santo, it makes your purifying practice even more powerful. Ask the plant medicine spirit of the sage to be there with you, and ask that it assist in purifying and cleansing you, your space, and your crystals. Hold the sage above the abalone shell as you light it. Let the sage stick catch fire, and allow it to burn for about 30 seconds. Then blow it out. Expert Tip: When burning sage, we recommend holding it at a downward angle, which will allow the flames to catch hold. Then, gently blow out the flames and waft the smoke with a feather into areas that need cleansing. As the smoke wafts from the stick or leaves, first sage yourself using the feather to direct the smoke toward your body. We suggest starting at the top of your head and working downward toward your feet. Sage your space. Open your front door and all of the windows in the house to allow the unwanted energy to be released. Starting at the front door, sage around the outside of the door and frame. Now, walk back inside, and begin saging the space by moving counter-clockwise through it—this is symbolic of taking negative and unwanted energy out. Using the feather, waft the smoke into the corners of every room and up to the ceiling. Say these words out loud or silently: “I ask that the plant spirit of the sage please remove and release any negative energy from this space.” While you are cleansing your home with sage, take this time to also cleanse your crystal collection. Let the smoke of burning sage completely envelop each gemstone while you thoughtfully remind yourself of the intention you have set for it. Ask that the burning sage cleanse and activate its frequencies, releasing it from any previous programming or unwanted energy. Finally, to clear away any unwanted energy from any hands that have touched your crystals before you, immerse them in the sacred smoke of the sage. When you’re finished, extinguish the sage stick by snuffing it out inside of the shell or a fireproof container. Expert tip: If the smoke of burning sage bothers you or other people in your group, you can also make a smoke-free cleansing spray by adding essential oils of white sage and palo santo to a spray bottle filled with purified water. TO SAGE WHEN IN A GROUP GATHERING: A smudge stick can also be used for group cleansing. Start your cleansing ritual by smudging the room with an entire bundle of white sage. Reaching as high as you can, allow the smoke to gently rise up the sides of the wall. As you smudge the area, ask the white sage to only allow positive energy into the environment and let the group be blessed with the best experiences. As each person enters the room, use the sage smudge stick to outline the body from front to back, then head to toe. While you cleanse them with a smudge stick, ask the wise energy of this ancient cleansing tool to keep them in a peaceful state that allows positive awareness, healing, and understanding. White sage is a powerful cleansing tool, especially when you use it with clear and focused intention. Colorado
